Soccer Season 2011!!

What’s up guys...

I’m here today because I want to tell y’all about the last women’s soccer season. Women’s soccer at Northwood is pretty big and the team is extremely good. We were Red River Conference Champions in 2010 and after a lot of obstacles, we ended the season in second in 2011!! If everything works out the way we plan, next season we will go to National Competition again.
Well like I said, last season we had a lot of obstacles.. We had a new coach and a completely new team. It took us awhile to start playing like a TEAM. We also had many injuries and sometimes we saw ourselves playing with exactly 11 players or even 9, when the number of players should be 11 v 11 every game. But trust me, this is a bad situation when you are practicing during the summer at 1 pm!! When the season started, we still had some people out because of injuries but after some ups and downs we finally made it to the finals.

In the first final we played against LSU in Shreveport and we killed them, the game ended 3x0. After that, we saw ourselves in the semi-finals and we played against Our Lady of the Lake University from San Antonio. The Semi-finals and final this year were in Wesleyan (our big rival) and they weren’t in the finals so just this fact made us happy already. The game ended 0x0, we went to overtime and in the second half of the overtime we scored after a foul to our favor from far away and that made it 1x0, Northwood winning. When the ref pointed to the middle (to signal the goal) of the field and ended the game, all of the Northwood fans that were there watching us play, invaded the field and in a big circle athletes, coaches and fans were praying and I swear that was the best game in the season that was craaaaaaazy!!! We were finally in the big final of the Red River Conference against the best team in the Tournament, University of Texas in Brownsville. We actually lost that game, but we knew that just to get there after everything we've been through together as a TEAM, we were already Champions. I’m really proud to be part of this team and to know that next season we are going to be the Champions, go to Nationals and kick butt in California!! :) Woooh!! \o/ \o/
See y'all later..

Did you know...

Texas is one great state and here are just a few reason why it is so amazing.

Texas is the only state to have the flags of 6 different nations fly over it. They are: Spain, France, Mexico, Republic of Texas, Confederate States, and the United States. Ever heard of Six Flags, the amusement park? (That's where it gets its' name.)

The King Ranch in Texas is bigger than the state of Rhode Island.

More wool comes from the state of Texas than any other state in the United States.

Texas is the only state to enter the United States by treaty instead of territorial annexation.

Caddo Lake is the only natural lake in the state.

Dr Pepper was invented in Waco in 1885. The Dublin Dr Pepper, 85 miles west of Waco, still uses pure imperial cane sugar in its product. There is no period after the Dr in Dr Pepper.

Texas comes from the Hasinai Indian word tejas meaning friends or allies.

The first word spoken from the moon on July 20, 1969 was Houston.

El Paso is closer to Needles, California than it is to Dallas.

The Flagship Hotel on Seawall Boulevard in Galveston is the only hotel in North America built entirely over the water.

And my personal favorite:
The state was an independent nation from 1836 to 1845.

You truly can learn something new everyday. I found all of these quite interesting. They were just a few of all the ones that I found. You can find even more online at http://www.50states.com/facts/texas.htm.

I can DO THIS!...and so can you

Well, maybe I can't do THAT!

OK I just want to say that I've always been sort of a math moron and for the past 2 months I was kind of struggling in my math class, but i didn't think I was doing THAT bad. so I'm checking out my grades online one day because I'm a nerd and I do that and I like to stay on top of things (like an academic boss:p) and I come to find out that I have a 61 in my math class. "WELL THIS IS JUST UNACCEPTABLE!"

so thankfully there are so many online resources like virtual tutors and stuff that are available to me here through this program that my class uses. So I'm like "Oh that's what that 'help me' button is for!" and I started using those and now my grade is a 70. It's still not where I would like it to be and still a little unacceptable for my preference, but it is picking up slowly, but surely and I am very excited for that.

Also, they have these awesome little videos where this guy will work a problem out for you and it's step by step and I can pause or rewind if I miss a part. Or they have this hotline number you can call and you give the person on the other end your problem and they will explain to you every detail of these confusing formulas. There's also some great tutors on campus at the Learning Resource Center (LRC) but I decided to opt for the online help because then I can get help on my own time or when I have time i should say; it was just much easier for me than to go schedule an appointment with the people at the LRC and go through all of that.

OK so here's the point: coming to Northwood I was worried about the help that would be available to me in my math classes or any other classes that I might need help with (for me though, it's just always been math). I had heard all throughout high school that students and professors in college aren't as willing to help as everyone in high school is. Well, I just completely debunked that myth because it is soooooo NOT TRUE! at least not here at Northwood:D

What a week

Good Morning!

Well I can say I have been busy but it was mostly relaxing this weekend here on campus! Last thursday we had the chance to play TPC Four Seasons. For those of you who don't know that is where they host the Byron Nelson Every year, a stop on the PGA tour.

Number 18 at TPC Four Seasons

Byron Nelson Himself!
This weekend after our very hot day on Thursday (around 80 Degrees) I decided to catch up on some much needed relaxation time with my friends! We had a movie night and I finally watched the hangover II. On Friday we went to the park enjoying the nice weather. There were quite a few ducks and geese at the pond who were some what friendly.

Jessica, Daryl, and I at the park

On Saturday night we went to the Comedy Club. Hyena's Night Club, it is in Dallas and if you have the chance to go it is worth it! It was quite the night of multicultural. The opening act was from Africa and the headliner Steve Hirst was from England. It was definitely the best night there I have been to! I have been there about three times and it is always good. But this week it was unbeatable! Sunday consisted of everyone FAVORITE activity! HOMEWORK! I got all caught up and it was nice to know I am compleated and prepared for the week! Although this week is already almost halfway done!

It was nice to not do anything to outrageous and it nice and relaxing! I guess you just need those weekends every now and again!

Talk to you soon

Season in full swing.

Hello everyone,

It has been a while, I just realized I have been back from my golf trip to California and didn't post any exciting news! The tournament was a lot of fun, however I didn't play as well as I had hoped I am continuing to work hard and it will come. Carol and I (the only two that played) really enjoyed the course. I spent almost 2 years in that area so it was nice to be back! A couple of my friends even stopped by to say hello! We arrived on Saturday and went down to Coronado Island. The sand is so soft there and it was awesome to watch the sun set! The best way I guess is to show you all so enjoy these pictures!
View of downtown San Diego on the Coronado Bridge.

Carol and I are super excited to be at the beach!

Carol, Bailey, Me, and Esther Enjoying the California weather.

NU PRIDE!!!

Sunday Before our practice round we had a chance to see Torrey pines, for those of you who don't know or follow golf, they were the site of the 2008 US open as well as the Farmers Insurance which happened to be there the week before us! It is right on the ocean and a beautiful layout. We were lucky enough to get a little history and tour from one of the starters.
Carol, Bailey, and I on the cart for our private tour.

What a view!

Team Photo was a must!
This was such a great trip! It makes you realize how lucky you are to play a college sport! Hopefully we can go back again soon!

On one last note we were invited to play Starr Hallow Golf Club in Talor, Tx, last Friday. Its a small 9 hole course but one of the nicest courses I have played. Why even President George W. Bush played out there in june! It was a fun day 27 holes, lots of laughs.

Well I finally got you all Caught up!

Have a Great week!

Never A Dull Moment

Well I meant to post this blog last night, so rather than admit that I'm a procrastinator let's just pretend that you are all a day ahead. So today is Sunday Feb. 12, 2012 (Don't get confused).

So let me tell you how you can never be bored at Northwood. First of all the Campus Activity Board (CAB) keeps us all pretty entertained throughout the whole year, but let's just say that it's the weekend and you just finished a big pile of homework and you DO NOT want to spend your weekend on campus. Well then, thank gosh the Dallas/Fort Worth area is only like...20 minutes away! And there's TONS of activities you can do there.

For example, this weekend we went to Dallas and had so much FUN!! Then we went back to that awesome SUSHI place I told you guys about before and there were laughs and just all around good times to be had. We definitely made memories that night!

So here's the only way you can ever be bored on campus: Don't do anything, stay in your dorm, and don't talk to anyone. But if you want to have fun you don't really have to much more than check you email, find out where the next activity is and walk  to the Student Activity Center (SAC)-because that's where they usually are. Or get in your car or a Friend's car and drive a measly 20 mins to the nearest hoppin' place in Dallas.

PS: Check out this AAWESOME DJ that was playing in Dallas...download now :p

Coffehouse Success!

 ♫♪♬♪♫♪♬
So last Tuesday the Campus Activity Board (CAB) organized another great even. Tyler Lee is a singer that I think sounds pretty similar to The Postal Service if you ask me. But thats cool because The Postal Service is a pretty good band and this Tyler guy sounded really good, plus he gave out two free CD's and free stuff is always good right!

The even was held in the Student Activity Center where the served the most AMAZING cookies you've ever had, coffee, hot chocolate, and cider. So yeah it was a VERY HIPSTER setting (No Big Deal)

Ok so last weekend Nicola and I went to spend the night at a lake house with some friends in Cedar Creek, which I guess is in Tool, Texas. I Don't know East Texas very well because there are way too many small towns that all run into each other, but any way....[Insert Picture Here]
                                                                        ▼
This weekend I learned that I NEED a lake house!
Well that's all for now, I have to get back to my homework

Busy Bee

Hello Everyone!

I am sorry that it has taken me so long to update since last time we spoke! As you have probably guessed school is in full bloom and classes are busy as ever. Many teachers have jumped right in with assignments and quizzes. Not only that but I also have been really busy with golf! our first tournament is taking place this weekend in the beautiful SAN DIEGO!!
Carol Kirstie and I playing before the big storm hit last week!

As you can see we had to hurry before the rain hit! The rain was the problem due to the fact that there was lightning in the area. I guess its a good thing we managed to finish before it all came down! Our team has been working really hard and I am really looking forward to this season!

On another note I had the opportunity to join my friend Jessica at her lake house this weekend! It was such a great time and a nice chance to take a break after two very busy weeks!

Daryl Jessica Megan and I
We made it out there on Saturday and enjoyed the scenery and got a tour around the property.
Looking out at the lake

It was a bit chilly by the lake but it was a beautiful view! Quite the contrast from the dry drought weather when I arrived in Texas! The Lake was beautiful and it was very peaceful!
Daryl and I dancing
We built a huge bonfire! Roasted marshmallows and hot dogs! However it took us quite a while to cook because it was so hot, We couldn't get close. Nothing like cooking on the fire! Daryl and I felt the call of the wild and decided to do a little tribal dance.. Kind of like Sandra bullock in the proposal! :)
View from dock
I guess there was no water in the cove before due to the drought, however due to the rain the water was rising. I woke up before everyone else so I decided to get some photos. I enjoyed my coffee on the dock and it was beautiful and with the sun it was nice and warm. Then the rest of the gang joined me after breakfast! It was really a great weekend.

I am off to San Diego on Saturday and will be back on Tuesday ! I will be sure to check in with all that is going on.

Talk to you soon!

Are you Pinterested?

My latest obsession is Pinterest! I know this is definitely a new favorite trend among girls (and some guys) to put things on virtual bulletin boards. For those of you who have not heard of this before, it is really cool. You set up bulletin boards and you have pictures to links or things you like on these pins on your boards. For example: I have a board called "Things to cook/bake." On this board I have several different pictures of yummy looking food items. If you click on the pictures they all contain links to the recipes. It is a really nifty way to organize some of your favorite things or favorite websites.

There are also a bunch of pins that link you to people's favorite blogs. I have some favorite blogs to share in an upcoming post. Pinterest also contains things that could be beneficial to companies by having people repin their products. I personally find myself killing hours on pinterest. I am addicted to say the least.

If you haven't heard of pinterest GO CHECK IT OUT! Here's a link to mine Christen's Pinterest! Happy Pinning!

Friendship Thrives

Friendship thrives here at Northwood University. One of the many things I love about Northwood, especially here at the Texas campus, is that we are such a close knit community. Since this fall we have all formed friendships and we have all become like second families to each other. I for one, am absolutely positive that I could not have made it through this past weekend without the help of all my wonderful friends on campus. I definitely learned the meaning of TRUE friendship last weekend and I am so grateful to know that my friends here love me and would take care of me as well as any of my family and friends back home. It kind of brings a sense of security (sounds cheesy to say) but at the beginning of the year I felt so homesick and kind of scared to be on my own for the first time. There were so many adult things that I was going to have to handle by myself for the first time, but last weekend when I thought I was going to have to go through a TREMENDOUS struggle all by myself my friends really showed me that nobody is ever really alone. a HUGE THANK YOU to all my Northwood buds. only in a place like this does a person meet  friends as great as you guys and I am completely confident that any prospective students would definitely find long lasting and dependable friendships.

So a few things about this weekend, we had a great time at this AWESOME little sushi place in Arlington called, Sushi Yaa. That's Christen and I, she is a fellow Student Blogger and my boss at the Admissions office-How many of your bosses would go out for sushi with you. Anyway the food there was amazing and after I had a little refresher course from another fellow Blogger, Nicola Jeffries, on how to use my chopsticks I was ready to go! Can you believe the entire buffet was only $10.00!!
So here is a picture of Nicola and I getting ready to go to a little house warming soiree for some friends that recently moved off campus. Don't let this discourage you they were perfectly happy with the dorms and campus life they just wanted to try to spread their wings a little and take on some extra responsibility (sounds crazy right)!
Well as you can see our weekend was pretty crazy and fun filled, but now it's time to get back to the books and focus on academics for this week. I got one Algebra assignment and two Economic assignments due tomorrow and a Marketing presentation on Thursday. Ugh the life of a college student is never boring haha!

MLK Day

As many of you may know, today is Martin Luther King Jr. Day. This is in remembrance of the life and legacy of Dr.Martin Luther King Jr. At Northwood, we like to honor any special day, such as today with a small ceremony. Today I had the honor of announcing our speaker for our small MLK day ceremony. The speaker was Tenetia Carpenter, a Northwood alumna.

Tenetia spoke on three main points that really impacted me as to how I need to go about things. She of course related this back to the life of MLK. The one point that really stuck out to me was that we just need to get out in the world and "do." This is simply taking action on things that you want to see happen. If you just sit around and follow the crowd, things that you want to see changed aren't going to change. This was what happened with Dr. King. He wanted a change in the world so he did just that and spoke out for justice and equality.

So many times in life we get wrapped up in just going along with the crowd and being a follower and we do not realize that we can do so much more than that. We need to really take example from Dr. King not only how he fought for justice but that he actually tried for something he believed in!

Guess who's back?!

Sister-less Traveling Pants,

Flight  - UA 1120

6:58 am
YYC-IAH

Well 3000 feet in the air and coming to you live from the first class Cabin! ( it pays to know people ;) ) Sitting here enjoying my free coffee and delicious breakfast I cannot wait to get out of the cold weather! It was – 18 and snowing when I left Calgary! So you can imagine that I was glad to get out of there. The captain told us it will be +18 in Houston.. That is quite the opposite.  Well I shall check in from the next Flight! I have 2 hours to kill when I arrive in Houston.

Calgary this morning -18!

  Flight CO 4978

ETD: 2:58
Actual: 3: 20

IAH – DFW

Well we finally took off on possibly on the smallest commercial plane ever. After stumbling to my seat dropping a dirty Kleenex on some poor women, not having my carry on fit in the overhead and had to have it checked under the plane, I finally got in my seat. We were informed we were waiting for a maintenance man and his tools to be transported to Dallas after an order was sent from headquarters. After about 30 minutes the pilot got up went outside and told us we were leaving because headquarters decided it was taking to long! What a waste! At least the flight was short!  Christen will be waiting for me at the gate! I hope she doesn’t leave due to the delay! :s

Houston! A wee bit warmer
Ahh Dallas Home sweet Home.. Kind of.

Dorm 21 G

Well I am finally in my room!  A long day! Classes and Golf tomorrow, It is so nice to see everyone. The gang is all here, I have gotten all my stuff organized for tomorrow and hopefully it all goes smoothly. I will let you know how classes go!

Greetings from up North!

Hello I never thought this day would come but I am heading back to campus on Sunday! I am mostly excited to start up the golf season again and see my friends. The Best part of the break is seeing all of your friends back home and your family. The worst part is not being able to see all the friends from school. You gain so much from those friends here at school, you are with them all the time and not seeing them for a month is really hard. The weather here has dropped :( It is in the negative degrees now. I am doing some temporary office jobs for the last three business days I am home. I should have known now that I take the bus downtown the weather would drop!! I feel like this break has gone by so slow, except this last week is going by too fast! I still need to pack and get some last minute shopping in!

Winter Finally here! First snow I have seen since last Christmas!

Of Course!! First day taking the bus Downtown!!
I will say I am  Excited to get back and start up the semester! I hope everone had a great Christmas, well relaxed and well Deserved! I hope to see you all on Campus soon!

Bonjour from Canada....

Hello Everyone! I am sorry it has taken me so long to write back, it has been a busy time here in Canada! Surprisingly warm weather too! Normally it is below 0 degrees Celsius (32 F) however it is + 15 Degrees!! (60 F) that is really warm. So much for ice skating and tobogganing. It has not been a total waste though, I have made it too the outdoor range for some practice time. However it has been incredibly windy! There are grass fires due to the warm dry weather and windy conditions. I hope everyone enjoyed there Christmas, I have had a chance to see most of my family its a nice break. However I will be happy to get back to campus seeing as there is not a whole lot to do up here.
Since I have been home I have been able to Catch up with some of my friends.
My Friend Shannon and I made a trip to IKEA... One small Car and Big Purchase later...

I caught up with my old roommate Sarah. We lived in China together.

Some of my oldest and dearest Friends Jessica and Tera.

Canada takes home the Bronze.

OH! I almost forgot, this year the World Juniors championship which is a Boxing day - New year Tradition was held in my home town. After a loss to the Russians in the semi finals Canada redeemed themselves to take home the Bronze. Nothing like a little hockey on your holiday.

Its nice to be home to spend some time away from school, I will be glad to see everyone and start up the semester! Hope you all had a wonderful break, A Merry Christmas and a Happy New year! Talk to you soon!!
